After proposed rule changes this past week, the NFL’s most boring play could mean more success for the Steelers.
Following the Owner’s Meetings last week, the league is wanting to encourage more teams to go for two-point conversions in the 2015 season by introducing new rules around the play. Already there’s been a few suggestions on what should change, such as placing the ball for the conversion on the one to one-half-yard line. Other suggestions have been to move the line of scrimmage back for PATs, or even getting rid of PATs altogether, meaning that teams would have to run the ball from the line of scrimmage. There has also been talk of allowing the defense to score if the ball has been turned over on a two point try, which is the same in college football.
Over the past five seasons, the Steelers have a lot of success with two point conversions as they’ve had a higher than average success rate than the rest of the NFL. Last season, they made all four of their attempts at a two point conversion. Although, compared to the rest of the league, the Steelers have attempted less conversions.
After the meetings finished, Steelers President Art Rooney II said: “The expectation is the Competition Committee is going to go back and look at it again and then try to come up with a proposal for us by the May meeting (in San Francisco).” Rooney continued, “Moving the ball to the one, the one-and-a-half-yard line (for the extra-point play) is definitely in the discussion.”
Obviously there’s already a lot to talk surrounding this play, so a proposal on the changes is expected to be created before the meetings in May and will be voted on before the season starts.
