With Ike Taylor out for at least 6 weeks with a broken forearm Allen will be counted on more than ever. Allen contract is up at the end of the season. If he performs well during Taylor absence Allen will make himself a lot of money in the future.
Allen will be tested quickly as the number one corner this Sunday as he will be assigned to cover 6’5″ 230 pound wide receiver Vincent Jackson. Allen clearly has the physical skills to be a number one corner. Allen must show he has improved in understanding reciever routes. Taylor has always been very consistent in run support and more run support will be expected out of Allen as well as being a more physical tackler. It’s clear that the one major area in which Allen is much better than Taylor is his ball skills.
Allen over the next 6 weeks will face several talented wide receivers. Some of those players include Earl Bennet,Marquis Lee,Torrey Smith,Steve Smith, Andre Johnson,Reggie Wayne just to name a few. Allen will most likely be expected to cover those revievers with little to no safety help.If Allen can perform well against receivers of that talent he will remain the number one corner even when Taylor returns. Allen wants a big payday. The competition is definitely set up for him to receive one.
