In addition to extending safety Troy Polamalu today, the Steelers announced they have given Heath Miller a three year contract, Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports.
Millers came to terms on a two-year extension through the 2016 season that will reduce his 2014 salary cap by more than $3 million.
It appears Miller took one for the team by extending his deal without getting anything in return.
Miller was entering the final year of his contract that called for him to earn $6 million in salary this year. According to Spotrac.com, his salary was reduced to $1,020,000 in 2014 and his salary cap from $9.5 million to $6,133,166.
He is now scheduled to earn salaries of $4 million in each of the 2015 and 2016 seasons and count $5,666,666 on their salary cap in each of those two seasons.
The Steelers converted $5 million of Miller’s $6 million 2014 salary into a signing bonus. By doing that, they spread the salary cap accounting for that bonus over the next three years, thus reducing his cap for 2014.
