Was the 08 Super Bowl Steelers Better than the 05 Team?

Forbes.com has come out with a rather interesting list, the Best Super Bowl Teams of the Decade. Of course the Steelers two teams are in the list, and it’s interesting to me that the 2008 squad ranked 4th, while the 2005 team ranked 5th.

1t. 2000 Baltimore Ravens
1t. 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
3. 2004 New England Patriots
4. 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers
5. 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers
6t. 2006 Indianapolis Colts
6t. 2003 New England Patriots
8. 2001 New England Patriots
9. 2007 New York Giants

To me, the 08 team was heads and tails better than that 05 team. The 05 team was a 6th seed, while the 08 team was a very solid two seed, and going into week 16 could have been a one seed if they would have beaten the Titans. The 08 team only had to win two playoff games to get into the dance, while that 05 team had to win three road games, which was a feat.

I would say that based on the defense as well as how much better the passing game was for that 08 team, there to me isn’t much of a comparison. The 08 team had what even coach Mike Tomlin called a “legendary defense.” Sure the 05 team finally got Bill Cowher over that elusive hump, but to me, the 08 team is better. Agree?

I gotta admit: I agree with you, Matt.

And, may I say how much it pains me to see the Dirty Birds atop this list? Aargh.

The ’08 team was a better team, but the ’05 team gets credit for accomplishing a feat that was never done before. This probably puts them higher on the list. I personally think the ’08 team had the better defense and more mature QB, while the ’05 team had the better running game with the legend Jerome Bettis taking his last “BUS” ride. The ’05 team really rallied around Jerome and wins against the Colts and Broncos were unbelievably exciting for Steeler fans waiting for the “1 for the thumb”. All things being equal, the ’08 team played a very tough schedule, won 12 games and a championship. The ’05 team did the impossible! I am thrilled both teams are on the list, just disgusted that the Ravens top this list! How can the Patriots and their 3 titles or the Steelers and their 2 titles not be #1? I mean Trent Dilfer over Ben or Brady or Peyton? The Steelers in ’08 might have won the most exciting Super Bowl of them all and they are #5? Questionable spot on the list.

I love that number 1 rating go ravens. I will give the 05 and 08 steelers credit. The 05 team accomplish an amazing feat and the 08 team had an legendary defense, comparable with the 2000 ravens,85 bears,2002 bucs and of course the 70s steel curtain. See i give credit where credit is due.

    1) Toss the 2000 Ravens from the mix – last decade. Even if you go by the last 10 seasons, they never repeated. Repeating is probably the best definition of how good the team really was. Regular season record is a useless stat. Winning the Superbowl is how every team is known and what every team strives for.

    2) Put an asterisk next to all the NE Patriots’ SB teams. After being caught with performance-enhancing electronics the Patriots were not nearly as good, losing to the NY Giants’ immaculate helmet. And if Mark McGwire ET. AL. are not eligible for the HOF, by the same standards used in baseball, the Patriots are also tainted.

    3) TB Bucs – very good but never repeated.

    4) Indy Colts – also very good but never repeated.

    5) NY Giants – a lucky ball to the helmet catch.

The Steelers are the only team to repeat though there is one more season in the real decade. Speaking of the 2000’s; this was probably one of the weakest 10-year stretches of the SB era. I’d place every SB dominant champion (60’s Packers, 70’s Steelers, 80’s 49ers, or 90’s Cowboys) ahead of any of this group.

Analyzing sports with Forbes.com is like having a Taco Bell drive-thru rank the best Italian food.

The Ravens should not be atop the list bc of their average quaterback Trent Dilfer.

Thomas, what Southbay meant was that it was virtually the same core group of players that won multiple Super Bowls for the Steelers. I cant believe The Ravens are number 1 on the list… Trent Dilfer and Tony Banks were the QBs, Lewis had a pretty god year with 1300 and 6 tds, and no 1000 yard recievers. The Defense had only 35 sacks and only 1 defensive TD. I know its not all about stats, but the numbers dont lie. I guess Forbes is making the list based off of biggest point differential of the Superbowl itself… Now Im not saying the Steelers had the best team but this order is way out of whack.

George H u like stats here’s some. The 2000 ravens defense broke the record for fewest points allowed and fewest rushing yards in a season.

I know it may seem like I am discrediting the 2000 Ravens, Im actually not trying to at all. They were one of the best Defenses in history hands down. They actually are exactly the way I think a football team should be. Solid run game, great o-line and excellent defense. The one thing I dont care much for about the team is that the main reason they didnt win multiple Superbowls is because they didnt have a passing game to compliment the run game, which is especially needed in todays modern NFL.
