Roethlisberger Ranks Fifth in All Current QB’s According to SI.Com

Pittsburgh Steelers v New York Jets

What quarterback, or even quarterbacks, are currently better than Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger right now?

Well, according to SI.com, there’s four better than Big Ben, as the site over the weekend ranked the quarterbacks in the NFL, and Roethlisberger is ranked fifth overall in the NFL.

Here’s what the site has to say:

5. Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers

Has evolved from a randomized, talent-based quarterback to a fully cerebral field general. And the talent’s still there.

The four QB’s ahead of Ben?

1. Tom Brady, Patriots
2. Aaron Rodgers, Packers
3. Andrew Luck, Colts
4. Peyton Manning, Broncos

Four every good QB’s, but at the same time, the season that Ben had last season is very hard to deny. The QB outplayed Luck in their meeting at Heinz Field, and Manning clearly went backwards after he reportedly suffered an injury late in the season.

It’s tough to place these QB’s because let’s be honest – they all are really, really good. Brady is going to miss the first four games after taking part in ‘Deflategate’ in the AFC Title Game, and we’ll see what the Pats are made of with him on the sidelines.

With the offense that the Steelers have, there’s a good shot that Ben will be at least five on the list, if not better come 2016.

I’ll give you Brady , Rogers and Manning . However , Andrew Luck ? Ben has been to three Super Bowls and has two Vince Lombardi’s sitting on his mantle at home to show for it . Granted , Luck is younger and has a huge upside but Ben has the hardware and the rings . At the end of the day he has to be ahead of Andrew Luck . Hes earned it .

Few sports writers have taken notice of it, but the Ben R. of 2006 is not the Ben R. of 2015. For years, I criticized Ben’s unwillingness to take check downs (instead of looking for the bomb) or to throw the ball away (instead of taking sacks). Now, in fairness, I must observe that Ben has improved in both. He has learned a bit of discipline, throws better from the pocket, and no longer relies on his legs alone to beat the rush. Injuries have taken their toll, but he is a smarter QB now than he was even under Arians. He was always a superb athlete, but now he is becoming something more.

Had he played within the offensive scheme earlier in his career and pursued victories rather than stats, he would be right up there with the top three. This year he has the offensive talent to make a statement, not by throwing for more yards, but by being more efficient, especially in the red zone. If he can do that in 2015, he’ll deserve to move up the list. Until then, I can’t say Ben’s place on this list is unjust. It’s up to Ben to demonstrate that he has finally mastered the art of game management.
