Steelers Defender Calls Out Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes

Cam Heyward Points to Mahomes’ “Flopping”

Steelers defensive anchor Cam Heyward didn’t mince words, calling out Patrick Mahomes for drawing penalties by exaggerating fouls. He compared Mahomes’ antics to basketball floppers like Bruce Bowen and Manu Ginobili. The implication was clear: Mahomes uses theatrics to gain an edge on the field. These statements add fuel to the ongoing conversation about officiating biases benefiting star quarterbacks.

Heyward’s comments are grounded in a series of debatable calls favoring Mahomes. A roughing-the-passer penalty on Will Anderson and an unnecessary roughness flag during a quarterback slide in the postseason against the Texans have drawn criticism. Observers perceive these moments as tipping the scales unfairly in Mahomes’ favor.

Data Smacks Down Perception

The narrative surrounding Mahomes and referee favoritism doesn’t hold water under scrutiny. Mahomes ranks eighth in the league for drawing roughing-the-passer penalties, trailing significantly behind the leader, Josh Allen. Allen’s rate is 0.311 penalties per game, compared to Mahomes’ 0.237. Over every 100 pass attempts, Mahomes barely draws half a penalty. If Mahomes enjoys favoritism, the numbers aren’t showing it.

Additionally, the Chiefs’ penalty data paints a very different picture from fans’ complaints. In their last three seasons, Kansas City has been penalized for 147 more yards than their opponents. In crunch-time situations, they rank as the seventh-worst team in penalty differential since Mahomes became the starter in 2018. Claims of consistent preferential treatment don’t align with this reality.

Betting Impact of Controversial Calls

The debate surrounding Patrick Mahomes and favorable referee calls doesn’t just heat up on the field—it reverberates in the betting markets. When a quarterback is perceived as receiving preferential treatment from officials, it can influence betting lines and public sentiment. For example, in high-stakes matchups like the AFC Championship, any perceived edge tied to penalties can weigh heavily on how bettors approach spreads and totals. Platforms such as BetMGM factor in public and sharp money movements when determining odds, often adjusting lines based on bettors’ reactions to narratives like this.

The ripple effect isn’t isolated to one game. When controversies flare up, especially on prime-time stages, bettors might skew toward backing the favored team, expecting late-game penalties to tip the scales. This perception could impact games where public confidence leans towards quarterbacks like Mahomes. However, seasoned gamblers need to avoid overreacting to small samples, instead relying on objective trends and data-driven analysis to back their wagers.

Mahomes Under the Microscope

Critics haven’t let Mahomes off the hook regarding his in-game conduct. His dramatic sideline tumble in the Texans game was labeled as theatrics by analysts like Troy Aikman. The incident reignited debates about quarterbacks exploiting rules for competitive advantage. Some suggest Mahomes leans heavily on selling contact to bait officials into critical flags.

This raises concerns about how players manipulate referees. If Mahomes’ reputation for “flopping” sticks, it could force the NFL to make rule adjustments, particularly around unnecessary roughness and roughing penalties. The idea of introducing replay assist for reviewing controversial penalties has gained traction amid league-wide frustration over these inconsistencies.

Chiefs’ Playoff Trends Defy “Favorable Calls” Theory

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t skating by on phantom flags. Instead, they’re playing under tougher circumstances than critics admit. The team hasn’t had fewer penalties than its opponent in its last 11 playoff games. Under referee Clete Blakeman—who has handed Mahomes more losses than any other official—the Chiefs lost six games. This hardly reflects a league prioritizing their success.

Yet Mahomes’ numbers show he isn’t being dragged along by fortunate officiating: 41 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, and a passer rating exceeding 105 in playoff games. These stats underscore his dominance, regardless of officiating narratives.

Questioning the Accountability of Defenders

Defensive players like Heyward may need to evaluate their own decisions before pointing fingers at quarterbacks. Creating opportunities for referees to throw flags—like late or careless hits on quarterbacks during slides—often puts defenders in avoidable situations. Consistency and discipline on the defensive side of the ball remain critical in neutralizing threats like Mahomes without relying on excuse-heavy narratives about officiating bias.

While league policies and referee consistency can always improve, the emphasis on Mahomes as the face of an officiating problem looks more like deflection than substantive critique.
