Steelers D Pitches Red Zone Shutout; Smith-Schuster’s Big TD Lifts Pittsburgh to 20-15 Win Over Lions

2. Bend But Don’t Break

Matthew Stafford marched the Lions up and down the field all night, but in crunch time the Steelers D played its best ball all season, not giving an inch when it mattered.

Yes the numbers were ugly for a team that came into Sunday night with the number one pass D in the league, as they allowed 206 yards to Stafford in the first half, and 423 yards for the game – but in the end it didn’t matter.

The Lions had a cray 18 plays inside the Steelers 20, and never crossed the goal line. They ran, they threw, they tried whatever they could, but the Steelers turned into a stone wall that stood their ground.

The Steelers D didn’t get the pressure or sacks like it looked like they could have based on how the Lions O-line had allowed sacks in bunches, but they did get enough to disrupt Stafford, and more so around the goal line.

The stand that stopped the Lions on fourth down changed the game as the Steelers then scored on the Smith-Schuster 97-yard TD score to make it a 20-12 game.

DC Keith Butler should get a game ball for his game plan against the Lions in this big win.

If someone had told me at the start of the season that the Steelers would be 6 – 2 and have a two game lead in the division with five of the next seven games in Heinz field at the mid way point of the season I would have jumped for joy . Guess what , today thats where the Steelers are at . Last nights game against the Lions wasnt a masterpiece by any means but they got the job done and at the end of the day thats all that matters . Ben can use the week off to rest , clear his mind and come back the following week with a good strong week of practice . Ben hasnt been at the top of his game the first half of the season and it showed again against the Lions . Missing wide open receivers is not Ben Roethlisberger and for some reason he doesnt look sharp . Is it age , is it a lack of focus , or is his heart simply not in it anymore ? Only he can answer those questions . At the end of the day the week off will do him and the team alot of good and will allow them to come back at full strength for the stretch run . Enjoy the week off boys , you earned it .
