With the season approaching on Monday night, the Steelers look like they are ready to wrap up one of their best players to a new deal.
The player is former first-round pick guard David DeCastro, who has been a staple on the Steelers offensive line since 2013.
Mark Kabloy of the Tribune-Review broke the news this afternoon that the Steelers and DeCastro are close to getting a deal done, and that it sounds the announcement of it could come very soon.
DeCastro told the Tribune-Review following Wednesday’s practice leading up to Monday’s season opener against the Washington Redskins that the two sides are nearing an agreement on an extension that will keep DeCastro with the organization into his 30s.
“We are getting close,” DeCastro said. “It all happened recently so we will see, but we are close.”
Two weeks ago, there wasn’t much movement between the two sides. DeCastro referred to talks as “nothing, really.”
That has changed. DeCastro is expecting the deal to be finalized within the next couple of days. “Hopefully in a few days I won’t have to think about it again,” DeCastro said.
DeCastro was picked to his first Pro Bowl after last season, and has played in 51 games thus far in his NFL career, starting 50 of them.
The All-Pro guard is currently in his final season of his rookie contract.
He inked a a four-year, $7,813,898 contract with the Steelers in 2012 that included a $4,122,836 signing bonus, but of course that will jump dramatically for his play the last few seasons once hopefully the deal gets done.
