For those of you that have been calling for the end of the Landry Jones era as the Steelers backup QB – today is your day.
Today the club announced they have taken QB Bruce Gradkowski off the Physically Unable to Perform List.
Gradkowski had been having issues with a sore throwing shoulder, but has recovered enough to be ready to take the field.
In two preseason games, both losses, Jones wasn’t very good, and could have just blown his shot as the Steelers third-string QB.

Gradkowski is a much better QB than most fans realize. I just hope his shoulder is 100%. I personally believe Tomlin made a mistake in removing him from the 2014 playoff game after he led the team down the field to the goal line for what would have been the go-ahead TD. As we all remember, Tomlin sent a whoozy Ben R. back on the field and he promptly threw an interception in the end zone to end our chances. My point in the present context is that Gradkowski can come off the bench and play well.
L. Jones, on the other hand, cannot. He has not played consistently well ever, he misses open receivers badly, and he bails out too soon under a strong pass rush. Yet, in fairness, he has improved since his rookie year, and our backup receivers did him no favors in the Jacksonville preseason game. He is probably going to be retained as our 3rd QB because he sees the field better and has a stronger arm than Boyd. Maybe, like Terry Bradshaw, it will take him five years to adjust to the pro game. But given the quality of pro-style QBs coming out of college these days (Russell, Bortles, Luck, Henne, Winston, Mariota, Petty), all of whom already show more promise than L. Jones, I doubt that the Steelers will be content to wait that long for Jones to develop.
