17. Sunday September 6th 1992 at Houston Oilers 29–24
The first win of the Bill Cowher era was a big upset, as the young Steelers went to Houston and beat the heavily favored Oilers with a bit of trickery. Down 14-0 Cohwer called for a risky fake punt by Mark Royals, which worked and got the team back in the game. Turnovers were another key, with Rod Woodson and Larry Griffin each collecting picks from Warren Moon. The Oilers crowd was stunned by the Steelers hungry attitude, and the win put the black and gold on a track to win 11 games and their first AFC Central under Cowher.

Matt, I seriously think you’ve overlooked the 1993 MNF game vs the AFC back to back defending Conference Champs, Buffalo Bills. It was a statement game for Bill Cowher’s Steelers who were eliminated in the play-offs by the Bills @ Three Rivers. Final score : 24-0.

Hi Anthony,
Thanks for the comment – the 93 Bills game was on the long original list for sure and was one of the last ones to get taken off to get the list to 20 games. I think the reason I stayed away from it was due to the aftermath of that game. The following week they were beat up bad by the Broncos, and then lost the next Sunday night to the Oilers. Overall after beating the Bills the team went 3-4 and had to claw their way into the playoffs. Just seemed like the team was never the same after that win, which again is kind of why I kept it off the list. Thank you again for the comment!
