Amid all the speculation about the way LeBeau resigned, we should bear in mind that (a) management views Keith Butler as the future DC and may have wanted to keep him happy and (b) Tomlin may have seen that our talent is better suited to the 4-3 than the 3-4 LeBeau preferred. Apparently Tomlin had already inserted himself into the defensive decision-making, under-mining LeBeau’s authority. LeBeau may simply have seen the writing on the wall and bailed out. Who can blame him? The full story has yet to come out. We’ll have a better idea when LeBeau’s former position is filled.
Be that as it may, the Steelers need an infusion of defensive talent, regardless of who the defensive coordinator is. The imminent loss of veteran players is going to make it very difficult for anyone to keep this defense at its present level without bringing in some solid free agents. Meanwhile, a number of young players simply aren’t earning their keep. All of these deficiencies cannot be addressed through the draft, and it is going to take at least another two seasons to plug all the holes.
Watching the NFL playoffs ought to have convinced fans that the Steelers as presently constituted would have fared no better than Cincinnati in the playoffs because of our D. Until that gets fixed, we’re not going to be legitimate contenders.
