5. A win was needed for morale as much as to remain competitive.
Sometimes a win is just, well, a win. Sunday’s win wasn’t pretty, but no one is going to toss it out. More than anything, it was a necessary win. We usually don’t talk about must-wins until the push for the playoffs, but it is a guarantee that had the Steelers lost back-to-back weeks to winless teams, this team didn’t have the strength to peel itself off the turf.
Morale-building begins with a “W”. The Steelers are far from over-confidant. However, this game may have gotten them away from the ledge and into a better head space. You can see it in the eyes, on the faces and in body language – especially from the veterans. This team is tired – tired of losing, tired of blown opportunities, tired of being beaten down and picked apart. This was a must-win game if for no other reason than to motivate the Steelers to keep moving.
