6. DRAFTING DOWN
Due to compensatory picks, Kevin Colbert insisted the Steelers will not be drafting ‘up’ in 2014, but the organization hasn’t thrown out the idea of drafting ‘down’.
When asked about how he determines when to go after a player deep into the draft, Colbert said, “It depends on who the player is you’re looking at versus the depth – the depth position where you might be able to get other players later. You can never pass up a quality player with hope that you’re going to get someone else in the sixth [or later] round. I mean you better take the player you like and have a real good feel for when you have the opportunity to take them.”
When trading back, Colbert added that it is done if a team is in a “no lose situation.”
“When you trade back, you want to see how many places you can go back, what you’re going to get in return and what are the odds that I’m going to get that player or that group of players,” said Colbert. “So if you trade back three spots, very rarely will you do it without [having] three people you would take…But as a general rule you never want to trade yourself away from a specific group of players.”

The Steelers absolutely need to go after players they want.
