The Steelers run game last season had spurts of where they were good, but in the end they simply were not able to get the big yards and more importantly, the key yards, when needed.
One player who was at the forefront last season of that was Jonathan Dwyer, who showed the same spurts of big games (10/21 at Cincinnati 122 yards with 7.2 yards per carry average), but then had games where he couldn’t get off the line of scrimmage (12/23 vs Cincinnati 39 yards and a 2.8 yard per carry average).
Dwyer is three years into his career, and the last two seasons has put up 746 yards in two seasons, leading the team with 623 yards last season.
There’s a growing feeling that Dwyer is the main reason why the run game didn’t perform up to snuff last year, and that’s why the team went out and grabbed rookie Le’Veon Bell as well as vet LaRod Stephens-Howling.
The Post-Gazette’s Ed Bouchette seems to feel that Dwyer could be on the outs with the team, saying so in the Steelers Training Camp Story Lines over the Weekend.
Injuries contributed to the poor showing by the runners last season. Even though he led them, Dwyer is no lock to make the roster. Bell could claim the starting job before camp is out with his main competition Isaac Redman. Baron Batch and Stephens-Howling are candidates on third downs.
Dwyer has been a player that at times look like he can break out. Not even being on the team at all?
That’s quite a difference from possibly being a starter a season ago.
