Todd Haley was the OC with the Cards when the Steelers played Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII. Now, he could be back there in the desert again in a much bigger role.
Ian Rapoport of NFL.com confirms that Arizona has asked permission to talk to Haley about their head coaching job, and NFL.com’s Albert Breer states the Steelers are going to allow the interview to take place.
How about this for a scenario – the Steelers lose Haley to the Cards, but BRING BACK Ken Whisenhunt, who was the Steelers OC before he left to take over in Arizona at the start of the 2006 season.
What a twist that would be.

Intriguing idea, Matt. I believe most Steelers fans would be happy for Haley if he got the job. And I think most fans would welcome back Whisenhunt, who is widely perceived to be a far better OC than head coach. But if it happened (a very big if), where do you think Big Ben would play next year?
Is it not equally instructive that the Steelers are willing to let Haley interview? Doesn’t take a crystal ball to figure that one out.

I’m all for the twist.

Won’t happen. I don’t think Ben liked playing under Whisenhunt all that much and he deserves to have input if a change is needed. Besides, Haley won’t get the Arizona job, there are better candidates for them to hire as head coach. He’ll be back in Pittsburgh, like it or not.

If Haley were to land a HC job who would be his replacement?

I would think an outside hire would be in order. The only viable replacement from within was Kruger but he’s now a head coach in college. Outside shot of a possible reunion of KW, but another kinda crazy idea would bring back Chan Gailey as OC. He was with the Steelers as OC under the Neil Odonnel years and the offense was rolling. I understand its a different era of football now but a reunion might not be a bad idea. Gailey was also the HC of the bills so its not like he’s been out of football for a long time.

I thought of Norv too but I’m thinking hel cost a little too much more than we might be willing to spend. Yea I forgot about Kirby. Not a bad option Jalen
