Quote from Ward via yahoo… “This isn’t how I wanted this chapter of my career to end. I did everything in my power to remain a Steeler and finish what I started here 14 years ago.
“I want to thank the organization, my teammates and coaches and everyone who made my run as a Steeler the best years of my life. To Mr. Rooney, thank you for allowing me to play for one of the greatest organizations in the world. To my fans and in particular, Steeler Nation, thank you for your support and all the great memories. I gave my heart and soul for you every down and I will always bleed black and gold.”-WARD

You will be missed! You were inspirational from day one–I speak for myself when I say I wanted you here until YOU decided it was time. You earned that. 86 forever and never worn again!

Hines leaving Pittsburgh like this makes me ill. He has been a solid presence on and off the field for so many years. His leadership in the locker room will be missed. Wish the Rooney’s could have figured a way to keep him on until retirement – won’t be the same to see him in another uniform.

As we have all said before, Hines Ward will be missed in many ways. He epitomizes the qualities of all our legendary players: talented, hard working, loyal, and tough. The same could be said for Aaron Smith, James Farrior, Casey Hampton, and the other Super Bowl veterans who have left or will soon leave.
The decision to release Hines was driven by financial considerations as well as his age and declining productivity. That’s understood. But the manner of the parting still left something to be desired in the minds of most fans.

I love hines as a player too but he got the farewell portion of his Steeler career when he got 800+ catches and 12,000 yards at the end of the regular season. Its tough but thats the nature of the business to be released the way he was.
Well done Hines, you were one of the best.
