Teams can start inking undrafted free agent players starting tonight, and while the names may not be all that filmiar, there’s word that the Steelers are on the verge of inking South Carolina tight end Wes Saunders.
The 22-year-old is listed at 6-5 and 270 pounds. In February of this year he was told that he was ruled ineligible for the 2011 NFL Draft. At one point in time, Saunders was recognized as one of the best tight ends in the country and was projected as a 1st or 2nd round pick.
But then Saunders was suspended and removed from the South Carolina football team for violating team rules, receiving improper benefits including heavily discounted rates at a South Carolina hotel, and making improper contact with an agent.
If he comes to the Steelers as rumored, he could be in the mix to take over the position of Matt Spaeth, who we found out today is a free agent and can ink anywhere.
