For those that wanted the Steelers to take a corner in round three – you got your wish. The Steelers looked to revamp their secondary that was torched in Super Bowl XLV with the selection of Curtis Brown from Texas in the third round of Friday NFL Draft.
Brown was the 95th overall pick. Coach Mike Tomlin , general manager Kevin Colbert and the Steelers entire defensive staff attended Texas Pro Day back in March.
The Steelers came into this draft needing to address the cornerback position. Their top player in that spot, Ike Taylor , is an unrestricted free agent, and their No. 3 corner William Gay is a restricted free agent.
Steelers secondary coach Carnell Lake said Brown is quick and can be a good cover corner or nickel back.
Statement from Brown:
“[Texas secondary] Coach [Duane] Akina is amazing. He taught me so much and I’m just happy that I made that decision to go to Texas and [play] under him and Mack Brown and Coach [Ken] Rucker,” Brown said. “Those three are amazing. Amazing. I’m just growing as a player and I’m going to keep growing and I’m just blessed to take this next step.”
