In 1974, The Chief, Art Rooney, Sr., began a tradition of annually honoring individuals–athletes, educators, and business and community leaders – for key contributions to Western Pennsylvania.
Past awardees include sports legends like Arnold Palmer, Terry Bradshaw, Dan Marino, and Joe Paterno, as well as top CEOs like Jim Rohr (PNC); Edgar Speer (U.S. Steel); Tony O’Reilly (Heinz), and Vince Sarni (PPG). Religious and political leaders have been honored too. Dan Onorato, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, and Duquesne University President, John Murray have received awards.
On April 7th, Hines Ward joins this distinguished group. Hines’ courage and passion are well known. Often overlooked is his work on behalf of children here and abroad.
In addition to honoring Hines, this year’s dinner also salutes Joyce Rothermel, CEO of the Pittsburgh Community Foodbank an organization that distributes 24 million pounds of food annually; Rod Doss, longtime publisher of the Pittsburgh Courier; and Pirate infielders Neil Walker and Bill Mazeroski.
Steelers Nation is invited to attend this year’s dinner. Join in honoring Hines Ward and be part of the Rooney tradition of recognizing achievement. It’s an evening that you will enjoy and remember.
Proceeds of the event benefit the Catholic Youth Association of Pittsburgh which was The Chief’s favorite charity. Since his passing in 1988, Ambassador Dan Rooney, and Steelers’ team president, Arthur J. Rooney II, have continued their support of CYA and the tradition of annually honoring individuals who make a difference in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Information about the work of the Catholic Youth Association is available at http://www.catholicyouthassociation.com.
The CYA and the Rooney Family thank you for your support.
