Steelers Ink 6’8 WR WV Grad Wes Lyons

The Steelers have inked a local product and rather tall WR, as the team has signed Woodland Hills High School and West Virginia graduate Wes Lyons.

The three-year starter for WV is 6-foot-8 and 245-pounds. He finished his career with 42 receptions for 517 yards, including 20 for 263 yards as a senior in 2009.

Lyons attended a minicamp with the Jets last spring but did not play this past season. Lyons worked out for the Steelers in late December and signed a two-year contract with the team Thursday.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Lyons said. “I’m blessed to have an opportunity to be in the NFL, especially with the hometown team. It’s like a dream come true.”

I don’t know if Mr Lyons is the answer, but the Steelers obviously see the problem: other teams have basketball players at TE and WR for those special situations (end zone and 3rd and short conversions) where the game becomes three-dimensional. A 6’8″ receiver with good hands becomes a very difficult weapon to defend vertically for the average safety or CB. If he has a little speed, all the better. Let’s hope he works out.

Iread the kid does between 4.6 and 4.7 in the 40 , has a 41 1/2″ vertical leap and plays well in the slot. we’ll have to see about the hands.

wardrules86, why the disdain for big ben? How many super bowls had the steelers won before he got here? How many have they won since he arrived? Just curious why you ridicule him so much.

YEA , I DO NOT GET THE BIG BEN RIDICULE EITHER!!! I MEAN WHAT DOES THE GUY HAVE TO DO, HOW MANY 4TH QTR. WINNING DRIVES HAS HE DONE IN HIS CAREER, CHECK 3RD. ACCURRACY, CHK. MAYBE WIN/LOSS AND S.B. APPEARANCES AND WINS… HE DIDNT HAVE THE BEST GAME IN SUPER BOWL, WE GET THAT BUT WOULD WE BE THERE WITHOUT HIM???? AND IM THINKING THE THROW TO SANTONIO HOLMES WILL FOREVER BE ONE OF THE BEST T.D. THROWS IN A SUPER BOWL LET ALONE WINNING T.D. AND TRUTH BE TOLD, NO DISRESPECT TO HOLMES CAUSE HE WAS GREAT BUT BIG BEN WAS SUPER BOWL M.V.P. THAT YEAR.
