Looking at the Offseason Priorities for the Steelers

With the offseason officially here, Pro Football Talk today has a list of Steelers free agents, as well as the direction they think the team should go in.

The big one: Lamarr Woodley.

Woodley was Pittsburgh’s best defensive player in the playoffs. He’s a huge part of their future and Pittsburgh will likely use the franchise tag to keep him before working on a long-term deal. James Harrison has set the bar high for linebacker contracts.

The key ingredients: Right tackle Willie Colon and cornerback Ike Taylor.

The Steelers have three players arguably worthy of the franchise tag. Colon’s free agent value may be down after missing 2010, but he was arguably Pittsburgh’s best lineman before he got hurt. They are too thin at tackle to let him go.

Taylor is the best cornerback on the team. He’s the type of good, not great player with a lot of big game experience that could strike it rich on the open market. He may prove tough to keep.

How about this scenario? Franchise Woodley, sign Taylor to a 3year deal and grab Ashiwhateverhisnameis in F/A from the Raiders? Then, keep Colon and maybe Flozell. To make cap room they can cut Gay (Please??) and possibly re negotiate the contracts of: Farrior and Smith? I just solved our problems!! LOL
If only it were this easy?

Mark, my friend, do you really want Flozell back, given his propensity for holding? Would he even come back at his age?

As for Asomugha, we can’t afford him. But if you’re going to dream, why not dream big? I like your optimism.

For a moment there, I thought you were going to suggest taking back S. Holmes? Or resurrecting the career of L. Sweed? (Just kidding. The Steelers wouldn’t do that, would they?)

There is no way the Steelers sign Asomugha. He is going to want way too much money

maybe asomugha can join the steelers for a shot at the super bowl by taking less money, hoping. we need to get rid of gay and mcfadden, start getting lewis and butler more involved. jimmy smith in the draft would be nice, he has frame. steelers #1

Speaking of Lewis and Butler, does anyone know why these two didn’t see more playing time last year? Are they too slow of foot, or is it a need for more seasoning? The coaches seemed happy with them after the draft — and then nothing.

I submit the same question with regard to Mr. Worilds. He was our #2 pick, but he seemed to disappear after the first few games.
