Tomorrow’s game between the Ravens and Steelers will be not only between two teams, but there will also be a lot of focus on the officiating crew that is assigned to the contest.
The crew will be headed by Jeff Triplette, who will always be remembered for accidentally hitting Browns OL Orlando Brown in the eye with a penalty flag weighed with ball bearings back in the 1999 season and then getting pushed down by Brown.
His 2010 NFL officiating crew consists of umpire Jeff Rice, head linesman Wayne Mackie, line judge Jeff Bergman, field judge Scott Steenson, side judge Dave Wyant and back judge Steve Freeman.
The crew headed by Triplette are 4th in the league with 234 called penalties for an average of 114.9 yards per game. So don’t be shocked to see some flags flying tomorrow at Heinz Field with Triplette and his crew calling the game.

It’s good to remember that these guys control the nature of the game. The league front office assigned this crew to keep the rivalry under control. (Remember the frequent ‘chippiness’ in last week’s Ravens v. KC game? Roger Goodell took note of that, you can bet.) Now, if these guys would only call all the Ravens’ offensive holding on James Harrison, it would be a happy day for Steelers fans — except that the game would be five hours long.

I couldn’t agree more, and I’ve seen a lot more than that slide in this year’s games. I hope they don’t flag them to death. It makes for a frutrating game to watch, let alone what the players must go through.

How can you make a call against Hines Ward who got mugged by two defenders? Even Gumble and Dierdorf were shocked. It made no impact on the outcome but somethings hinkey. Or how about calling a penalty against the Steelers when thee Ravens have THIRTEEN men on the field? Something is wrong!
