With what Antonio Brown was able to do Saturday night, the Post Gazette says that now there could be a bit of a log jam at wide out, meaning that Stefan Logan could be out of a job:
Tomlin did not have much to say about the most productive receiver on the field Saturday night. Brown turned Dixon’s 8-yard pass on a crossing pattern into a 68-yard touchdown. Brown’s performance elicited this muted response from Tomlin: “Nice start.” Maybe the coach does not want it to go to his rookie’s head. The Steelers do have a slight dilemma at wide receiver. They have six of them who look like keepers and if they keep all six, return specialist Stefan Logan must go.
What do you guys (and gals) think about the team dumping Logan? Can he easily be replaced? Does he deserve one more season to see if he can prove himself? I saw enough, if they let him go, I don’t think the team will be any worse off.

I wrote here that it appeared Logan was “as good as gone” immediately after the draft, when the team chose two wide receivers, Sanders and Brown, both of whom have experience returning the ball. This is NOT a knock on S. Logan. He is a talented player, but he can play only one position. With Sanders and Brown, you get guys who serve both functions, and both have impressed in camp. Sanders and Brown will both get a chance to return kicks in preseason. If either one can match Logan’s production (anemic so far this year, and no TDs last year), then one of them will assume Logan’s duties.
I actually thought the Steelers would cut Logan before this so he could catch on with another team. Logan is a good guy, but the talent level in Pgh. is against him. For Logan to demonstrate the same versatility as Sanders and Brown, he would need to replace one of the receivers. That isn’t going to happen.

Logan is a valuable member of special teams not just as a return man, but as a tackler on the other side of the ball. Until I am convinced that the special teams have fixed their run back woes, im not ready to replace Logan with a wide reciever. Plus, I didn’t see much from Sanders anyway. Brown looked great though. Great hands, speed, and vision. I think he’s got to stay, though afternoons just one preseason game, what the hell do we know?

I tend to agree that Logan will likely be gone. He is very good at returning kicks but that is the only thing that he is good at.
His height and lack of experience running routes will hurt his chances as a receiver and he is too small to take hits he would endure as a running back. He also has had some trouble on the coverage units of special teams. While his speed is an asset, he often outruns the rest of the coverage unit which creates a hole behind him if he doesn’t tackle the returner. His size also hurts him here where it is easier for opposing returners to break his tackles or he often requires help in bringing down the opponent.
I also worry that opponents may have found an achilles heel in Logan’s return ability. Several times last year I saw opponents try to hold Logan up while their team-mates tried to strip the ball. Although unsuccessful, Detroit tried the same thing on Saturday and I think that due to his size/weight that Logan may be susceptable to such tactics.
I still think that Logan has significant talent, but at this point (with other guys that can return kicks), is he worth the roster spot???
