The Steelers are not in the giving mood anymore, as the team has spoken they will not give out extensions to any current players till at least after the 2010 season.
The move cannot be a popular one for players like Jeff Reed and LaMarr Woodley, two players entering the final years of their deals and that have been vocal about wanting new deals.
“As an organization we decided we’re going to focus on 2010,” Kevin Colbert said Monday.
Fellow starters tackle Willie Colon and cornerback Ike Taylor are two other players that are working on the last year of their deals.
“We’re at the point now where we always go where we can go, then we decide we have to move on with the season and we’ve reached that decision,” Mike Tomlin said.
Woodley is working on the last year of his rookie deal, and is set to make $550,000 this season. While he seems upset about the situation, the Steelers have already said they will keep him around. You have to wonder if this latest development is going to change Woodley’s mind about wanting to be with the Black and Gold long term.
“When I’m out on the field, I’m not thinking, ‘Oh, man, contract this and that; I don’t want to get hurt.’ If you’re out there thinking about those things, that’s when you get hurt, that’s when you go out there and you don’t perform as well and don’t help your team out. I can’t be one of those guys,” Woodley said.
