Goodell says Roethlisberger suspension could be longer than 6 games

In more disturbing news around that franchise QB that keeps getting into trouble, word now is the league can increase the already six-game suspension on Ben Roethlisberger if new evidence of misbehavior emerges that violates its personal conduct policy.

Roger Goodell said Friday at his annual session with Associated Press Sports Editors that the conduct policy allows him to revisit the ban, announced earlier this week. If evidence of other incidents is presented, “the penalty still has some flexibility,” Goodell said.

“It’s my responsibility to protect our reputation and our integrity. That’s what the personal conduct policy is; we all have to be held to a higher standard. It specifically states you don’t have to violate the law if there is a pattern of behavior.

“We go back through all the incidents and try to understand is there is any kind of pattern, and we have enough information to believe he’s not making sound judgments at critical points.”

This of course is not good news, and basically what it does is mean the QB may miss even more time, which puts the 2010 season even more at risk. The Steelers shopped the QB around before the draft, but found no takers. Now though, one as to wonder if the suspension is longer, if the Steelers will once again look to move him.

This appears to be old news re-packaged or re-stated, Mark. Goodell reserved the right to shorten or extend the period from the beginning. The key phrase is: “if evidence of other incidens is presented.” If Ben minds his Ps and Qs (no new incidents), he should be back on the Bye Week.
