Report says talk of Trading Roethlisberger internal only

All this chatter here and elsewhere the past two days about trading Big Ben has evidently been only internal between officials at the Steelers. National Football Post says that likely Ben will play with little to no room for error in 2010 and beyond when it comes to on field activity:

The Pittsburgh Steelers are mulling over the idea of trading quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, according to an NFL.com report that stated management has discussed the possibility just internally at this point. Per the report, the Steelers’ owners are chagrined by the sexual assault allegations against Roethlisberger that didn’t wind up with him charged with any crimes. “The Rooneys are livid,” a source said.

Roethlisberger isn’t expected to be punished today, but the Steelers are taking a stance where they are open to listening to trade possibilities if teams initiate discussions with them. “This is not a case of having to get rid of this guy,” the source said. “There would have to be fair value.”

Perhaps a fresh start would be good for Roethlisberger and the Steelers. However, teams are likely to be hesitant to take on Roethlisberger despite his skills and winning track record because of the recent off-field issues. My hunch is he’ll continue to play for the Steelers, but it will be under a zero tolerance policy.

Trade him to the raiders. Let him find out what a goofy owner is like and loosing most of the time. He would fit right in with all the locker room fighting and big dumb jocks out there. Need at least a #1 pick this year a d a #2 next

He is not getting traded this season. He is under a “zero” tolerance microscope now, and I am starting to think that he will NOT end his career in Pittsburgh. That would be a shame.

He’s not going anywhere unless he screws up again. Only time will tell if he’s smart enough to recoginze he’s got a great thing here. I’m willing to give him his second strike but one more and the Big Ben Jerseys (both mine and my 10 year old daughter’s) go on the bonfire.

As stupid as the Steelers are they will trade Ben for 10th round draft choice. This reminds me of the Catholic Church which I’m a member. Don’t sin but priest are abusing kids. Getting rid of Satonio was a giant mistake and judgeing Ben of anything other that a crime is a mistake. Who cares, only the do gooders out there that don’t look in there own closet. As a Steeler Fan leave him play football and cut the crap. Go onto Tiger or something. Or clean your own house. If Ben is traded the Steelers can kiss a forty year fan good bye and they can go on being the vatican of football.

Pro football is a business. At any time, the owners of any team will listen to ‘trade possibilities’ for any player at ‘fair value.’ The difficulty in trading Ben is not his off-field issues or agreeing on the right combination of draft picks, but that $65 million contract.

With all the rumors flying, you would suspect there was serious interest in acquiring Ben in some quarters. Ordinarily, the offering team would want the Steelers to eat part of that contract expense. The Steelers may simply prefer to keep Ben, with all his warts, than do that. Otherwise, a deal should have gone down by now.

Every NFL team knows Ben is in play, but so far, no one has been willing to pay ‘fair value.’ That fact may be more sobering for Ben than any discipline handed down by the league.
