The Steelers received three more picks in the April 22-24 NFL draft today as the league doled out 32 compensatory draft picks to 19 different teams. The Steelers gained two draft choices in the fifth round and one in the seventh, which gives them 10 overall. The Steelers lost cornerback Bryant McFadden, wide receiver Nate Washington and quarterback Byron Leftwich and signed none last offseason.

Neither fans nor the media have made much of these two extra 5th round picks, but in this year’s draft, they could be huge for the Steelers, especially as bargaining chips for trading up or for developmental needs. Even as straight picks, they are good news: there will be quality players left in Round 5 at positions where the Steelers have needs. K. Colbert will use these picks wisely and the team will be improved because of them.
