Sweed not being counted out as an option at WR

I’ve thought since the moment the 2009 season ended that we’d probably had seen the last of Limas Sweed. He’s done little other than drop key passes in his Steelers career, and it seems that the team is ready to move on without him. Not so fast.

Kevin Colbert says in the Tribune-Review they haven’t given up totally on Sweed, and they will made a decision and statement on him when they have to.

Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said the team is not counting wide receiver Limas Sweed out. Sweed, who missed the Steelers’ last two games in 2009 after the team placed him on the non-injury/illness list, has been taking part in the offseason workouts that started last week. The Steelers have yet to disclose why Sweed, who has seven career catches, missed the end of the season. “At the appropriate time,” Colbert said, “a statement will be made.”

Just for the fact that he was picked so high and has so much promise, the Steelers have to give him a chance to win a position. However, I cant imagine that he will. Bringing back El and finding Battle during FA, wasnt without a reason. The biggest reason is: life without Sweed. Sure, depth is a must. Sweed could have been depth, if not more. The emergence of Wallace, the ever-growing talent of Holmes, the dependability of Ward and the resurrection of Randle-El makes Sweed nothing more than a “possibility” at this point. Teams rarely pay 2nd round money to possibilities after 2 years of ZERO production. How about this: try Sweed at Kick returning. This way he can get field time and get used to catching and holding the ball. Build his confidence and help him make a contribution.I know it sounds ridiculous, but it could help. After the 2000 season, it was apparent that Troy Edwards was not a star receiver but he made an impact on Special teams and carved a pretty good niche for the team returning. And he was a 1st rounder!

I wish the status of Sweed’s place on the team was our biggest worries. Having said that, its obviously his make or break year. Ton of talent coming out of Texas. Will never blame the Steelers for grabbing him in round two. It looks like he isn’t going to work out. Its too bad. If Pittsburgh gives him his walking papers, I am confident that there would be many other GMs in th league that will invite him to their camp. Unfortunately, Sweed might tap into his true worth with a change of scenery.

I think it’s the right decision for the Steelers to at least look at him one more time. The Steelers are one of the “Class Francises” in the NFL. I don’t see Mr. Rooney giving up on this kid. There is something deep down in Sweed that pours out success..it’s just surrounded by emotional demons. This guy is a great talent just waiting to explode. Mark, I agree with you, put him on kick off situations and build his confidence from there. Mark my words this day…he will be a monster if the Steelers decide to keep him in 2010. The Steelers will look like geniuses for keeping him. Colbert has not been around this long by putting his efforts in “Bust” players. He sees something in Sweed that worth giving him a final look.
