Ryan Clark didn’t exactly have a great 2009, just like the rest of the secondary. He’s yet another question mark for coming back in 2010, and I wouldn’t be shocked if he takes more money to play elsewhere, as the Steelers probably have a number in mind for him, but won’t go over that.
The Post-Gazette reports that the team will talk to Clark, but at the same time won’t go overboard in paying him, as they already have a lot of money going to Troy on the other side of the safety spot:
Steelers free safety Ryan Clark wants to come back and play for the Steelers in 2010, rejoining Pro Bowl strong safety Troy Polamalu. Clark had a good season with the Steelers in 2009 and they needed it with Polamalu missing 11 games but they are not likely to have their two safeties among the highest-paid players on their defense. Clark re-signing with the Steelers will boil down to how much less he is willing to take from them vs. going elsewhere.

Did that article really say that Clark had a good season in 2009? WOW, what were they watching. It must have been written with Clark standing behind the author. Clark has been a good player, and a better player when Troy is back there. Its time to get younger and faster behind Polamalu.

Totally agree, Mark. I had to read and reread that line as well over and over (“Had a good year”) because I thought I was reading it wrong and needed glasses or something.

No doubt Clark had a down year, but so did the rest of the secondary. I wont be surprised to see a big improvement especially when Troy returns next year. Im all for drafting either at DT or Safety in the first round and if that means Clark is gone then so be it. Clark is a class act and he dersveres to get paid. The Steelers will most likely give some low ball offer just like we did with Faneca. Im not comparing the two players because Faneca was a surperior talent for us. But when the Steelers know that they cant afford certain players, they offer low contracts so that the player is almost forced out the door.

The more we see these articles and the more we look back on the disaster that was in the secondary this past season, I think we should be well aware that the team is going defense in the draft. A good Safety or a Corner is to be expected. But, like some of us have said the past few weeks, a starting corner or safety may have to come via free agency (for immediate impact) and the 1st pick might be an Offensive lineman.
