Pro Football Weekly hears rumors that undrafted rookie offensive lineman Ramon Foster has a strong shot at making the Steelers’ roster. Foster’s ability to play guard and tackle, not to mention his surprising play in training camp, has really bolstered his chances. Foster was a two-year starter at Tennessee who took over the right tackle job and didn’t miss a game in 2007 or 2008

Has anyone seen any indication that the offensive line looks any better than it did last season? I don’t get it. We keep giving out $4MM – $6MM dollar contracts to guys Starks and Kemoeatu but their play doesn’t seem to be getting any better…we’re just paying more for it. We can’t run the ball between the tackles any more. Ben has been forced, and great by the way, to run for his life and make plays out off his scrambles. Willie is getting banged up, Ben is always nicked up, and we’re near the bottom of the league in rushing now…not Steeler football.
Now I recognize we won the Super Bowl with this offensive line, the low rushing yards and Ben scrambling every time he dropped back. But, I don’t think this is a recipe for on going success and a repeat. Are we spending $10MM a year wisely on these two? Where is the “nasty” Chris Kemoeatu that I heard so much about while he was backing up Faneca? We were unwilling to give Faneca, a perennial All-Pro, the money he was looking for but we’re giving even more to these two underachievers?
I’ve read criticisms of Willie Parker regarding his toughness and inability to run between the tackles. I submit that it is not Willie’s inability to be an off tackle runningback, it is the inability of the O-line to provide any gaps large enough for him to fit through…and it’s not like he’s the size of Jerome Bettis…no offense Bus.
What’s the down side of starting a guy like Tony Hills? Less rushing yards? Ben might get sacked? He’s $3.5MM cheaper and can at least stand in front of a D-Tackle just as well as Kemoeatu. He can also side step a rushing D-End just as well as Starks does for a fraction of the price. Where have you gone Jon Kolb…
