Why I would Support the Steelers Signing Mike Vick

vick1
I’ve read the comments, battled with it in my own mind, and time and time again, I’ve come to this conclusion – I’ll take Mike Vick on the Steelers in 2009.

That is a tough statement to make, and while I know that I’ll get blasted in the comments section today, tomorrow, and probably over the weekend, I will try to at least make some type of case as to why I think this move would help the Steelers on the field, and not threaten their locker room with distractions off of it.

1. Vick can play the game – Yes, Mike Vick is not the next Joe Montana or anything like that, but there’s been plenty of times in his pro career that he showed he can throw the football and make plays, and even make more plays with his legs. We are talking about a talented player here, not a practice squad guy.

2. He fills a position on this club – The Steelers for the past 14 seasons always seemed to have that multi-threat player that once the ball is in is hands, can run or throw it – Kordell Stewart, Antwaan Randle-El, these guys always gave the Steelers that trick play ability. For now, Dennis Dixon is that guy, and I don’t think he’s ready for that role – Vick would be.

3. The guy paid his debt
– I realize that what he did was AWFUL and WRONG, but let’s be real, he paid his debt with a prison term. If your going to allow Browns WR Donte’ Stallworth a shot to play again AFTER KILLING A MAN DRUNK DRIVING, should we not allow Vick the same ability to play again?

4. The Steelers could handle the off the field PR nightmare that comes with signing Vick – Pittsburgh is already somewhat is the midst of chaos with the Ben Roethlisberger situation, and not to say Vick would totally overshadow that, but come on – he would. This is not to say that one distraction deserves another, but I think the Steelers and Mike Tomlin could have Vick on their team and it not be a circus.

5. It’s a low risk move
– If Vick screws up, you kick him to the curb and say “thanks but no thanks.” Nothing lost, nothing gained. But if he shows that he is truly reformed and is doing things right, you have another weapon to a team that is ready for another Super Bowl run.

So go ahead, slam me, throw me your comments, tell me I should have me Steelers Nation membership revoked, how your not going to attend games or watch them if they sign him, whatever. I’m man enough to say it – this team would be a better team with Mike Vick on it.

I actually agree with you. So long as it’s ONLY one year and the team would indeed kick him to the curb in the event that he “screws” up again. I believe Tomlin is the best coach out there to deal with Vick’s likes, I think it takes away from Ben’s (off field) dealings and I think in the KR, PR, Slot, Wildcat, PT-QB, Trick-PLay and yes, even some situational defense (FS or SS) he could do nothing but help this team…I mean, yeah it sucks and is wrong about the dogfighting and I would never do it but the Stallwotrth killing a man thing is WAY more serious in my eyes because it was a HUMAN who got killed!

And Stallworth is a Brown, not a Steeler! Nuff said.

I don’t think it’s a half bad idea – at least the frenzy would take the heat off of Big Ben, allowing him to concentrate on a seventh while Vick wards off Peta folk.

I don’t know; while I like the idea that it will distract from Ben’s situtation, and he was a good football player, I just can’t seem to get behind the idea of him on our team. First, he’s been in jail for the last year; he hasn’t played in over a year and his skills may have deteriorated. Notice, i’m not saying they have deteriorated, but i’m just acknowledging that a year of not playing football may have had an effect. Second, this situation is completely different than Daunte Stallworths. Stallworth didn’t get drunk, get into his car, and go out looking for someone to hit. It was an accident. Preventable and horrible, but not intentional. What Vick did to those poor dogs was intentional from start to finish. Yes, he’s done his time; but has he truly reformed? I think that at the end of this day, the Steelers have to pass on him. Let him work for another club for a year, see if he’s truly remourseful and changed, and then decide. The Steelers have always been role models (and still are, despite what Ben’s going through), and I just think it’s too much of a risk to sign Vick right now.

My fiance seems to agree with you, and athletically, I agree as well. My only thought is will Steelers fans be able to get past Vick’s transgressions and look at his abilities, or will his off-field activities dictate his reputation in the Steel City?

    Given a lesser-of-two-evils scenario, I will say this…at least the Steelers didn’t take T.O….

I don’t see why anyone is even talking about this, so what that adding Vick to the team would help to take the media attention away from Ben.(Who will be proven innocent and all this will go away before camp is over.)
And who really cares that Vick could play football and wasn’t too bad at it back in 2007. That biggest fact staring me in the face is that the Steelers as a team do not need Micheal Vick to compete, We don’t need him to win, or get back to the Superbowl. Why waste our time even thinking about the idea, let some other sad sack team who is looking for a little bang for their buck try this guy out.

Don’t get me wrong I have read many posts as to what Micheal Vick brings to the table and what he could possible offer a team. I also believe that yes he has done his time and deserves another chance to play in the NFL, but we don’t need him. We have a great team without the guy and with the terms of his conditional reinstatement, I’m not sure how much he would really positively contribute. Has anyone thought about how the other players on the team would receive him? What kind of looker room or leadership presence would he have??

Sorry I say good luck in life Mr. Vick, but do it somewhere else.
