The Steelers signing of their draft picks is officially underway, as the team has announced the signing of one of their third round picks – Keenan Lewis – and two fifth round picks – Frank Summers and Joe Burnett. The team also waived punter Dirk Johnson.
Johnson signed with the club back on May 1st, and was brought in for Daniel Sepulveda, who was still recovering from his torn ACL from a season ago. Johnson is a 12-year vet, and has also been on the rosters of the Cardinals, Bears, Eagles and Saints.
Lewis could have a big impact in the secondary. He was an All-Pac 10 honorable mention and Academic All-Pac 10 player his senior year. Lewis had 117 tackles, including 81 solo in 48 career starts, and may find his way on the field in nickel and dime situations.
Burnett could play in the secondary, and also can return kicks. He did just that at Central Florida, and also was a four-year starter. He had 16 picks in college, and also had three punt returns and two kickoff returns for scores.
Summers could be the teams new short yardage back in 2009. The team has lacked that power back since Jerome Bettis retired, and late in 2008 that spot went to Gary Rusell, but he’s since been released, and the role could be opened for Summers.
