Penguins fans and Pittsburgh fans in general are upset at former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher because “the chin” supported the Carolina Hurricanes in the teams recent NHL semifinal series, which the Pens won 4 games to none to move on to the Stanely Cup Finals.
Cowher cranked the Hurricanes’ pre-game siren, which is a team ritual, prior to their loss to the Penguins in Game 4 which was on Tuesday. As quick as you can say “terrible towel,” fans of the Steel City quickly launched into a tirade against the coach that led the team to their 5th Super Bowl win in Super Bowl XL vs the Seahawks.
“I remember him as a guy from Pittsburgh, so it’s a little disappointing, maybe, to see him there, but that’s fine,” Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Now that the Pens are moving on, Cowher is back on the Pittsburgh bandwagon, as he told the Tribune-Review that he would support the Pens if they beat the Hurricanes, which they did in four games. “I’ll take this white (Carolina rally towel) and replace it with a gold one,” he said. “Absolutely. I’m an Eastern Conference guy. Whichever of these teams comes out, I’ll be pulling for them.”
I know that it’s kind of a slap in the face Cowher supporting a team against a Pittsburgh club, but let’s remember that this is a home-grown guy that stood on the Steelers sidelines bleeding black and gold for 15 years. No matter who he supports at anytime, to me he’ll always be a Steeler and Pittsburgh guy at heart.
