We all know that the Steelers have a rich tradition of big plays over the course of their history. From six Super Bowls to countless playoff games to huge wins, the Steelers are the most celebrated NFL team in history for a number of reasons. Today we keep going with our countdown of the “Top 10 Catches in Steelers History”. Today, we throw out Number 4. Be back tomorrow for Number 3:
Number 4: January 20th 1980 – John Stallworth’s 73-yard Touchdown vs the Rams in Super Bowl XIV
The Steelers found themselves in a bit of trouble vs the upstart Rams in Super Bowl XIV, but it was this amazing 73-yard catch and run by John Stallworth that got the team back in front, and in front to stay in their 31-19 win that gave the team their 4th Super Bowl title. With 12:59 left in the game, Rams punter Ken Clark pinned the Steelers back with a 59-yard punt to their own 25-yard line. Then faced with 3rd-and-8, Terry Bradshaw took the snap, faked a handoff, and then threw a pass to Stallworth, who was running a streak pattern down the middle of the field. Stallworth caught the ball without breaking stride and took it all the way to the end zone for the 73-yard go-ahead touchdown to make the score 24-19. The NFL Films highlight film notes that safety Eddie Brown was supposed to help Rod Perry in covering Stallworth, but for some reason Brown ignored the Steeler receiver. It was the biggest play in Stallworth’s legendary career.
