Are the pleas of Big Ben getting through to the Steelers upper brass? Word is that the team is indeed going to take a look at a wide out when it comes to the draft later this month. Don’t forget that it was Ben who called out the team earlier this offseason that he would like a tall wide out to throw to, much like he had when Plaxico Burress was around his rookie season.
Football Operations guru Kevin Colbert spoke out at the owners meeting on Monday about the wide out situation, and he said that the team is listening when it comes to what Roethlisberger wants. “I’m glad that Ben is willing to talk about it, talk about things he’d like to see for his team,” Colbert said, “because for me that shows some growth in his willingness to accept more of a leadership role, and there’s nothing wrong with it. Again, we’re going to try to get good players to help at all positions,” Colbert said, “and if a tall receiver happens to be a good receiver and a value pick, that’s something we’ll definitely consider.”
So what will happen next? Don’t forget that the team REALLY needs offensive linemen, and without them, Ben won’t be on his feet very long. As much as having a tall receiver would be nice, let’s not lose focus that this team needs hogs up on that line to open holes for Fast Willie, and to keep Ben on his feet. Without that, having a tall wide out won’t matter one bit.
