The Steelers, despite not having all that much cash to spend in the free agent market, are getting visits from two players that might come to them as a discount. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that the team spent some time with recently released Panthers starter on their O-line – Justin Hartwig. The 29-year old was at the Steelers complex on Friday, and was a starter for the Panthers, and could help out the Steelers with some of the issues they have had on their O-line with injuries and other issues. The center is 6-4, 312 pounds.
The other player at the complex talking to the team was Donnie Nickey, a safety who was a backup for five seasons with the Titans. Nickey is very good on special-teams, and last season played in all 16 games with the Titans, making 8 tackles in spot play on defense. He is from Akron, Ohio, and was the teams fifth round pick back in 2003. The Steelers like to pick up role players like Nickey, and likely would use him as nothing more than a backup and on special teams.
