For those few teams looking for a head coach in the NFL, you can forget seeing the chin of Bill Cowher on your sidelines anytime soon. Cowher, who would be at the top of the list for the four teams – the Dolphins, Falcons, Redskins and Ravens looking for head coaches, declared Wednesday that he is not leaving the comfort of CBS’ TV studios anytime soon.
Cowher did a pretty decent job this season at CBS, and had signed on for two years to do TV. He says he plans to honor that, and will not return to coaching in the 2007 season. “I don’t have any plans to coach in 2008,” Cowher said in today’s Baltimore Sun. The Redskins and Ravens were both teams that were linked to Cowher and the shot at talking to him about leaving the booth for the sidelines once again.
It could be one case of a coach who truly after 15 seasons was burned out. He put his heart and soul into the Steelers from 1992 to 2006, and was finally rewarded with a Super Bowl in 2005. Now it appears that he’ll need another year of R&R before he is ready to return to coaching once again. “I want to spend more time with my family, and I’m really enjoying and trying to get better at my job at CBS.”
So for now, the Skins and Ravens had better look in other directions. The Skins will be starting to talk to possible head coaches anyday now, while the Ravens have already started talking to guys that can step in, and seem content knowing that Cowher is happy where he’s at. Like it or not.
