Mike Tomlin spent Monday addressing his team and then meeting individually with his players. The Steelers have a few unrestricted free agents like guard Alan Faneca, linebacker Clark Haggans, offensive lineman Max Starks, defensive end Travis Kirschke and fullback Dan Kreider. Faneca is a seven-time pro bowler who could demand big money on the open market. Haggans has started at outside linebacker since replacing Jason Gildon but the Steelers may not be interested in resigning Haggans because they have two young linebackers in LaMar Woodley and Laurence Timmons.
Starks was playing well when he was hurt filling in for Marvell Smith a left tackle. Starks could demand big money on the open market as well. Krischke is a backup and Kreider lost his starting job this season. The Steelers have a couple of restricted free agents as well; tackle Trai Essex, guard Chris Kemoeatu, receiver Nate Washington and long-snapper Greg Warren.
The Steelers can match any contract offered to a restricted free agent to retain their services. Several players have one year left on their contracts; tackle Marvell Smith, linebacker James Farrior, receiver Cedrick Wilson, quarterback Charlie Batch, cornerback Bryant McFadden and tight end Jerame Tuman.
