The somber feelings of a day a shocking and flat out embaressing 19-16 OT loss to the awful New York Jets is setting in the steel city. Below are some rather alarming and yet very true quotes from the Steelers locker room on the loss:
Ben Roethlisberger:
“They did some things early and they were very physical,” Roethlisberger said. “Give them a lot of credit. We have to come out and we have to play Steelers football. I don’t feel we did that today. They were probably the more physical team, and I think it showed.”
Hines Ward on the teams road struggles:
“To get where we want to go we definitely have to win on the road,” Ward said. “That’s what good teams do, they not only win at home, they win on the road. Luckily for us, we have a home game. We’re pretty good at home.”
“I think we all had a part in this loss — offense, defense, special teams — it was a total team loss,” Ward said.
“In the course of 16 weeks, you’re not going to play perfect week in and week out,” he said. “You’re not going to play a perfect game every time. We laid an egg. We didn’t play well, offensively, special teams or defensively. Everyone has to be accountable. We have to learn from it and move on. We don’t have time to dwell on a bad game.”
Coach Mike Tomlin:
“When you do those things — you don’t stop the run, you can’t run the ball effectively, you can’t protect your quarterback — you have a high probability of losing,” Tomlin said. “Thomas Jones ran the damn ball on us!”
“Quite simply, we missed tackles,” Tomlin said. “We missed more tackles than I’ve ever seen us miss. That’s the story.”
Deshea Townsend:
“I know a lot of guys missed some tackles,” Townsend said. “We allowed them to get extra yards.”
