After last weeks nailbitter with the Browns, the Steelers should have a MUCH easier time this week with the woeful New York Jets, despite the game being away from the friendly confines of the Steel City. The Jets are awful, one season after a playoff birth in which then rookie head coach Eric Mangini went 10-6. This year the team has been beaten up with injuries, bad roster moves (trading Pete Kendell and a bad trade for Thomas Jones) and poor QB play. The defense is 30th in the league, allowing 380.2 yards per game. In a nutshell, this should be an easy win for the Steelers.
The concern may come from the special teams, where last week the Steelers allowed two long returns, one for a score, from the Browns Josh Cribbs. This week they get Leon Washington, who is putting up 33.5 yards per kick return, and has already returned three for scores. If the Steelers don’t do a better job in this department, they could get burned. The other thing they can’t do is simply to allow the Jets to feel they have a shot here. New York could have won a few other games, including a week two game at Baltimore, week four and five vs the Bills and Giants, and weeks 7 and 8 vs the Bengals and Bills. They are 1-8 for a reason, but the Steelers cannot underestimate them and allow them to stick around.
Bottom line, the Steelers are a much better team. They have the leagues 5th ranked offense, the #1 defense, and they are not making critical mistakes like last season then they went 8-8. They are heavy road favorites for a reason, and this game should have plenty of times for the backups to get some work by the fourth quarter. Steelers win in a blowout. Pittsburgh 34 NY Jets 13
