Yes it was a vicious hit, but was it worth $5,000? The NFL has decided it was, and for Hines Ward, his pocket book is a little less today, thanks to the hit last week in the Steelers opener vs the Browns where Hines slammed Cleveland corner Daven Holly. The Browns corner termed the hit “a heinous act,” and it left him with a concussion that could leave him on the sidelines this week when the Browns host the Bengals.
Hines stated that he felt the hit was “a clean hit that just came a little late.” The hit came with 3:18 left in the third quarter when RB Najeh Davenport caught a pass, rolled over a few Browns defenders, and as he was going down Hines knocked out Holly. Ward was given a 15-yard penalty, and once Holly was able to talk about it, he said “I don’t feel like it was a respectable shot.”
