It will be interesting to see just how much Mike Tomlin pushes for QB Ben Roethlisberger to play Sunday when the Steelers travel to Cleveland to play the Browns.
The Steelers have clinched a wild-card spot already, but the bigger prize awaits if they best Cleveland and the Bengals beat the Ravens. The prize is a playoff bye and a week’s rest, which could be huge for Roethlisberger’s gimpy ankle.
So does Tomlin run the risk of hurting Ben more and throwing him out there against the Browns? Or do you go with Charlie Batch again, hope you can get the win, and then hope the Ravens choke in Cincy?
Roethlisberger’s status for the Steelers against the Browns is unclear at this time, and Tomlin said Tuesday that Roethlisberger and center Maurkice Pouncey both have “a shot” to play in Sunday’s regular season finale.
“It is our intention right now that if those guys are healthy enough to practice and prepare, then we will play them,” Tomlin said Tuesday.
We will see more Wednesday when Ben and the team report for practice. I would expect Ben to not be on the practice field Wednesday, but if he is going to play, he’ll likely do some things Thursday to get ready for Cleveland.
